Vienna in 1874

In the last decades of the nineteenth century publishers and printing houses took advantage of the great interest in the nation's Centennial by specializing in local histories and atlases.  Much of what we generally know about Vienna appears in works published at this time.

This slideshow features lithograph engravings that accompany maps of Vienna in the Combination Atlas Map of Trumbull County, Ohio: Compiled, Drawn and Published from Personal Examinations and Surveys (Chicago: L. H. Everts, [1874]). These images were purchased--that is, these atlases were sold by subscription, and owners paid to have the mapmaker-artist draw and include these images of their businesses and residences.
